Return to Marrakech at the end of the afternoon

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is an iconic fortified village in southern Morocco. Built of rammed earth in the 17th century, it overlooks the Ounila Valley and once served as a resting place for desert caravans.
Its ochre alleyways and majestic towers have made it a legendary place, immortalized by numerous films such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

A Bit of History

Perched on the banks of the Ounila River, south of the High Atlas Mountains, Aït Ben Haddou is an ancient ksar (fortified village) built in the 17th century. Constructed entirely of rammed earth and ochre clay, it perfectly illustrates the traditional architecture of southern Morocco.

In the past, this strategic location served as a resting place for merchant caravans traveling between Marrakech and the Sahara. Merchants would stop here to rest, trade their goods—gold, salt, spices—and find refuge behind its protective walls.

Its name, Aït Ben Haddou, means "the tribe of the sons of Haddou," referring to the Berber chief who founded the village. Over time, the ksar has transformed into a veritable earthen citadel, surrounded by kasbahs, towers, and narrow alleyways where the light reflects off the clay walls.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Aït Ben Haddou is today a symbol of ancestral Morocco, admired for its authenticity and timeless beauty.

Its unique charm has also captivated the world of cinema: from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator, and including Game of Thrones, numerous films have been shot there, bringing international renown to the site.

Between history, legend, and a dreamlike setting, Aït Ben Haddou embodies all the magic of southern Morocco.
