Return to Marrakech at the end of the afternoon
Embark on an unforgettable excursion to Ouarzazate and the fortified village of Aït Ben Haddou, true gems of southern Morocco. Located at the gateway to the desert, this region offers a spectacular panorama of Atlas Mountains, verdant valleys, and sun-drenched desert landscapes.
A Bit of History
Located south of the High Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate marks the transition between the verdant valleys of the north and the vast expanses of the Sahara. Known as the Gateway to the Desert, this peaceful city captivates visitors with its golden light, architectural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes.
Founded in the 1920s under the French protectorate, Ouarzazate developed on a former caravan crossroads linking Marrakech, the Sahara, and the great oases of the south. Once a hub for the gold, spice, and salt trade routes, the city has preserved its Berber soul while becoming a major center for international cinema.
🎬 Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of the Desert”
Thanks to its exceptional light and the beauty of its natural scenery, Ouarzazate is now nicknamed the Hollywood of Africa. Many films and series have been shot here: Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, and Prince of Persia, to name a few. You can visit Atlas Studios or CLA Studios, veritable open-air film museums.
🏰 Kasbahs and Historical Heritage
The city is home to the Kasbah of Taourirt, the former residence of the powerful Pasha Glaoui, a listed historical monument that has been admirably restored. Its mud-brick towers, narrow streets, and ochre walls immerse visitors in a setting worthy of oriental tales. A few kilometers away, the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a breathtaking spectacle: a fortified village built of raw earth, seemingly suspended in time and overlooking the valley.
